25 dead in suspected arson attack on Japanese animation studio
I've read various other reports this morning than the one linked. Reports are between 25-33 people died and over 40 injured. Approximately 70 people were in the studio, so no one was left unhurt.

I'm just shocked and saddened for the loss of life.

The studio, often called KyoAni was created some very popular anime titles as Full Metal Panic, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On, Free! Eternal Summer and others.

The loss of life is terrible. That is the most important thing. I feel the need to emphasize that before I say that this fire also means the loss of the studio's creative output. The fire seems to have completely gutted the three-story building. Which means all the projects they were working on are probably gone as well as material from past work. They has shows planned for the next few years - which now may never happen. I would guess most of their files, notes, drawings, etc. are gone. The company has lost all of it's work and probably a large part of the talented artists that created there. It's too early for anything to be said, but it's possible that this will be the end of Kyoto Animation.

One thing I did read in the coverage of the fire is something I find shocking: there was only one exit to the building. Which is why there was such a loss of life. How the hell is that possible! How could you legally get away with that! It would never pass US fire codes. I can't believe that Japanese fire codes would allow accept only one exit either. I wonder if Kyoto Animation will be held liable in the loss of life as well.

I feel deeply for the people who worked there and for there families. I understand that Sentai Filmworks has set up a GoFundMe account for KyoAni and it's employees.

comments
